Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“It’s possible to be so focused on one aspect of the obvious that we miss out on the full reality before us.” So writes Audrey West, a Moravian professor of theology. Maybe that strikes a chord for us in many aspects of our secular life. But in our faith life? How do we so easily miss the full reality of some of the most familiar touchstones of our discipleship?

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Have you ever done a good thing for the wrong reason? Sometimes that can actually work out. But when it comes to following Jesus it’s always a bad idea. Turns out following is not quite the same as being a disciple. So thank God we have a patient teacher in Jesus. And on this weekend of Vancouver Pride that teaching can be an important one for the church.

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

*Recording now available–see link below*

Is there anything more basic to our sustenance as human beings and communities as bread? Probably not much. And today we begin a stretch of Sundays focusing on the “bread chapter” of John’s gospel. We hear about a miracle Jesus does with bread. But is this Jesus’s miracle alone? And is it a miracle that only happened once, way back then?

The Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Another Sunday full of images of sheep and shepherds! Not that anyone’s complaining. But as our first reading today notes, there are shepherds, and then there are Shepherds. Or more accurately, there is The Shepherd. The one who gives us rest, leads us on right pathways, and whose compassion is in exhaustible. We welcome today pastor and preacher Tim LeDrew, a wonderful and well respected shepherd of our synod.

The Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Picnic Under the Trees

Today’s worship service will be taking place outdoors, therefore the service will not be live-streamed. Sorry if this causes any inconvenience.

Politics and religion. Two subjects that don’t mix… Right? Well, maybe that depends on what you mean by “politics”. We get a lesson today on this touchy subject from two biblical characters for whom the tension we feel between politics and religion was never an issue. And a lesson too on discipleship.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today we enjoy a guest sermon from Rev. Matthew Senf, Assistant to Bishop Kathy for Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations. He preaches about homecomings. Maybe over the summer you will experience a homecoming in the form of a family reunion or a visit from seldom seen relative. I certainly hope yours goes better than the one we read about in the gospel. Then again, maybe sometimes even conflicted homecomings can bear good news.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Faith looms large in our gospel today. The faith of an anxious father and that of a desperately ill woman. So much so that we can miss the most obvious thing about this story. That Jesus cares for bodies. Real human flesh and its health and well-being. What does it say about us that we need to be reminded of that?

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

As our Synod convention comes to a close this Sunday morning, our sermon today comes from Bishop Larry Kochendorfer of the Synod of Alberta and the Territories. We are grateful for the work of our wider church and for those who dedicate their time and energy to its ministry. Sometimes church life can feel like a storm on the sea. But our Lord is with us through every challenge. So even more than the joy of our Synod community, we celebrate the Lord whose Spirit binds us together and makes us one.

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Another Sunday. Another parable from Jesus about a crazy farmer. But this Sunday it’s that seed that catches our attention. That seed that produces a beautiful and bountiful harvest without any human assistance. It might defy logic or stretch credulity. But maybe it’s also the source of the deepest hope we could know.

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Family and Church. Two of the most precious and beautiful gifts we have in our life. And gifts that help to form our identity and nurture our spirits. So why is Jesus messing with both of them in our gospel today? And what is it about these gifts that he’s so eager to warn us about? We join Jesus today as he goes home for some family time. Only to find himself in more than one family fight.
