Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Continuing the theme of good (i.e. weird) farming practices from last week, Jesus tells another parable today that seems counterintuitive. And as much as my lazy green thumb appreciates his advice, his characterization of the kingdom of heaven as a weed-infested wheat-field is just a tad irksome. Can good news be hiding in those weeds somewhere?

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Annual Picnic!

This service will unfortunately not be live-streamed as it is taking place outdoors.

This Sunday we have a great celebration planned. It will be our annual outdoor service and picnic to celebrate the end of VBS week. And this year we’ll be joined by our friends from St. Laurence Anglican who we’ve been doing VBS with all week. We will gather at 10:30 am for our service outdoors on our side lawn.

Please bring a lawn chair for yourself and an extra one for those who may not have one. And also we are asking you to bring a salad, side dish, or dessert for the potluck lunch. Our youth will be grilling hotdogs.

To be a good disciple is to be a good farmer. At least thats how it seems sometimes listening to Jesus’ teachings. Then again, what Jesus considers a “good farmer” in our parable this morning would leave any real farmer scratching their head in disbelief. But maybe there’s a method in Christ’s madness after all…somewhere.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Come to me all you that are weary and I will give you rest.” Maybe the ideal scripture passage for a summer Sunday service. We could all use a little rest these days. But Christ’s invitation is to more than just a little R&R. Its an invitation with a challenge. And an invitation with a big promise. So maybe don’t grab those flip flops and unplug just yet…

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

All are welcome! Its a hymn we love to sing. But also a description of our congregation. Or at least what we hope people believe about us. But what does welcoming look like? Is it more than just providing a church experience thats comfortable, inviting, and friendly? Or is welcoming something Jesus calls his people to practice out in the world too? Is welcoming something we do – even do best – between Sundays?

Today’s worship service will be live-streamed on our YouTube channel at 10:30 am. Join us live, or watch the video here at a later time.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus with a sword. Now there’s an image you don’t see on too many needlepoint wall hangings. But thats our gospel today. That, and some disconcerting talk about death and baptism. And somewhere in the mix is good news. Maybe today is an especially good day to listen closely.

Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

We all love to think of Jesus as the compassionate shepherd, healer, and friend. And then there are gospel stories like the one we get today (never mind the story we get next Sunday!) that give us a more challenging image of our Lord. Maybe Jesus just always likes to keep us off guard. Or maybe he wants us to rethink what compassion actually looks like.

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Purity has its place. We like to make sure our drinking water is pure. We enjoy the sound of pure audio. We love the taste of pure Orange Juice. But in the Christian life? Well, thats where our penchant for purity can become problematic. As some confused pharisees discover to their chagrin in our gospel this morning. And some others in desperate straits discover to their joy.

Holy Trinity

Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity. With the emphasis on celebration. Because comprehending it isn’t really an option. Although, it does have something to teach us. Yes, about God. But also about us. And what it means to live together with everything and everyone God has made.

Today’s worship service will be live-streamed on our YouTube channel at 10:30 am. Join us live, or watch the video here at a later time.

Pentecost

Pentecost Sunday. The birthday of the church. The gift of the Holy Spirit. A celebration of diversity. The day God lit a fire under the butts (OK, over the heads) of the disciples. The perfect day to put the youth in charge! And so we celebrate with our IngYte youth ministry today and look ahead to what the Spirit has in store for the future of the church.

Ascension of Our Lord

This Sunday is the last Sunday of the Easter season. We are celebrating the feast of the ascension of our Lord. A good subtitle for this day might be “Up, up, but not away!” The first disciples might have thought otherwise, if not for those two men (angels?) in white robes. And their sermon is one we still need to hear.
