Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Be on guard against all kinds of greed,” Jesus exhorts us today. That’s a lesson we know well. But not one that we practice nearly as faithfully. For which there may be many reasons. But Jesus tells a parable that highlights one of those reasons that couldn’t be more true for us today. One we are so often oblivious too even in our exercise of compassion. Listen to a story of a farmer.

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Lord’s Prayer is easily the most familiar and often recited prayer among Christians. But is it more than just a prayer? True it makes an attractive poster, or a lovely bookmark. But in truth this prayer Jesus taught us has more to give us than just memorable words to pray when our own escape us. Today we listen a little closer to words we’ve heard many times, but maybe never given close attention.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Our gospel today comes right in time for summer. Complete with Jesus’s words about taking a break from all that worries and distracts us. Or is his advice striking at something deeper within us? Maybe he’s not so much exhorting us to chill out as he is asking us to focus. And maybe that holds the key to surviving through those times of worry and distraction that we can’t ever seem to avoid.

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

To love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind is to reflect God’s mercy in responding to one’s neighbour. That mercy found its most profound expression in the “gospel that has come to you”—namely the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That gospel mercy comes to us again today: at the font, at the table, and from the pulpit. It is very near to you.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

God is the source of our nourishment. Jesus’ invitation to “take and eat . . . take and drink” is a repeated one. In holy communion, in the word read and proclaimed, in the assembly of the people of God, the dominion of God has come near. Rejoice! Your name is written in heaven.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

We have no good apart from God. That makes Jesus’ call to follow him an invitation to freedom. This is freedom to revel in the Spirit’s fruit: love, joy, peace, and patience. This is freedom to not be imprisoned by anything that would keep us from the fullness of the life God has given us. This is the path of life.

Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

June is a significant month for important social emphases in our country. Yesterday was National Indigenous Peoples Day and this whole month is Pride Month. We will recognize these two emphases in our worship today. And what a stroke of luck that our gospel and our second reading speak to us of God’s will for human community, with a little exorcism thrown in for drama! Because it turns out there’s a few demons standing in the way of that community becoming a reality.

Holy Trinity Sunday 2025

A Sunday like Holy Trinity that focusses on a theological doctrine maybe makes us think about truth. But to quote a famous Bible bad guy, “What is truth?” Is it eternal, written in stone, unchanging, and immutable? Or is it more dynamic, nimble, and responsive to our changing lives than that? We go back to hear Jesus’s last words to his disciples as he gives them one last lesson in the life of the Spirit of truth.

Seventh Sunday of Easter: Ascension of Our Lord

Up, up, and away! That’s usually what we think the story of Christ’s Ascension is all about. And in a sense it is. But it’s also a story that points us in some other directions. It asks us to look down and take notice of the place where we are planted. It asked us to look around at those with whom we share that place. And it points us forward to where God is calling us to go. Maybe it even asks us to look behind us to consider what exactly propels us forward on this journey of faith we’re on.

Sixth Sunday of Easter

What’s the one thing that gets in the way of you receiving new life and following Christ’s call? Maybe it isn’t just one thing. Our readings today give us a few options. And draw us back to the truth at the heart of this Easter season. We are a resurrection people. So what does that mean for life in a world as crazy as ours is right now?
