Hey everyone, this is just a reminder that today we will celebrate the eve of Epiphany with a return to our beloved tradition of Soup and Sing. Join us at 6 pm for a dinner of soup and bread, followed at 7 pm by Holden Evening Prayer. We also invite you to bring leftover Christmas baking to share for dessert.
The service will also be live streamed on our YouTube channel for those who are interested.
What’s in a name? Quite a bit actually. Especially when you have several of them. Today we celebrate the festival of the Name of Jesus by reflecting on a few of the other names that he’s been given. And exploring how much the various names of Jesus can speak volumes for us and our lives.
Just a note: our worship service today will be held at 11 AM. Please don’t forget to take a little extra time in the morning. Also, today we will enjoy a service of favourite carols by request.
Today’s worship service will be live-streamed on our YouTube channel at 10:30 am. Join us live, or watch the video here at a later time.

REMINDER: Our service today will not be held at Good Shepherd!
Instead, this Sunday we gather with our friends at St. Laurence Anglican Church for a joint service and Sunday School Christmas pageant. You can find a recording of the service on their Facebook page which is www.facebook.com/StLaurenceCoquitlam. As Christ was born to reconcile all divisions so we celebrate with joy our deepening friendship with our Anglican siblings in faith.
On this Third Sunday in Advent, John the Baptist expects the Messiah to bring God’s judgment upon the earth. From a prison cell, he wonders whether Jesus is the one who will do this. Jesus’ response indicates that God’s reign is indeed being fulfilled already through healing and restoration.
Also, our service today will include the opportunity to come forward for healing prayer. Those who come forward will be offered a general prayer for healing.

It’s one the first things we teach our kids. “Always tell the truth”. Its good advice. So why don’t we live by it as grown ups? John the Baptist appears for us this week in our gospel as he does every year on this Second Sunday of Advent. With a sermon exhorting us to “tell the truth!” Especially about ourselves. Easier said than done. Maybe a little fire and Holy Spirit will help.

We’re still a month away from the dreaded task of making New Years resolutions. But today is the first Sunday of the new church year. Maybe a good time to reflect on those ways we need to refresh our discipleship habits. Maybe stay awake more. Dream more. Love more. All interesting suggestions from our readings today. How will they change the way we live the year ahead?

Today we have a wonderful and unique service planned for the last Sunday of the church year. We’ll be baptizing twins for starters. And then, at the end of the service, the congregation will join the choir to video-record a piece of music that will be posted on the Lutheran World Federation website for their Advent feature.

Its getting late in the church year. Just two more Sundays left. So maybe its natural for our scripture readings to focus on the theme of the end times. But that doesn’t make the subject of “the end” easier for us to hear. However, maybe it make Jesus’s words of hope in the midst of crisis stand out more. Can you hear them?
