It’s been said that one sign of true maturity is being able to take criticism well. And so it is. But we all know that some criticism can cut a little too deep and touch nerves that we don’t ever want touched. Jesus touches one of those nerves in the people of his hometown congregation today in our gospel with nearly disastrous consequences. We’re often told how important it is to ease our way into a new responsibility. To take it easy. Don’t bite off more than we can chew. Ask questions. Well, it appears that Jesus never got that memo. In the story we read today of his first sermon preached to his home congregation he chooses a doozy of a text. And then he preaches an even bigger doozy of a sermon. And yet its a sermon that we need to hear too, maybe now more than ever.

Lutherans haven’t traditionally celebrated Mary, the mother of Jesus, all that much. But in our gospel reading today she is our teacher giving us lessons in what it means to follow Jesus. What an awesome Sunday! We welcome a new brother in Christ, we affirm our own baptisms (and get a little wet), and we hear the story of Jesus’s baptism. Baptism is such an affirming sacrament. But can it also be a force for resistance? We’ll explore that as we sink into this service soaked in baptism!

Please be advised that due to various circumstances the 10 pm Christmas Eve service scheduled for this evening has been cancelled. The 4 pm service will still go ahead as planned. However no new registrations for in-person attendance are being accepted for the 4 pm service.
