Fifth Sunday in the Season of Creation

Faith is our topic this week, Spurred on by a plea the disciples make in our gospel reading that we can all identify with…”Lord, increase our faith!” And Jesus responds with words that on the surface sound like a snarky reprimand. But there’s more encouragement in his message than we give him credit for. “You don’t need more faith,” he says in essence. So what’s so encouraging about that?

Fourth Sunday in the Season of Creation

Who of us hasn’t had the experience of looking without seeing. Ever lost your car keys? And then discovered that they were right under your nose in a place you had already searched? Jesus tell a dark story about the same kind of experience, but with some more serious implications. And he raises the question,” What are we not seeing in our world today that we need to?”

Third Sunday in the Season of Creation

It’s been said that the beauty of Jesus’ is parables is that they have many meanings. And then there are parables like the one we have today where we struggle to find even one meaning. Like Jacob wrestling with the angel at the river Jabot we long for the blessing of some good news out of these disorienting words. But maybe it’s closer than we think. At least from one perspective.

Second Sunday in the Season of Creation

Lost and found. Maybe those two words conjure up anxious memories of searching for our car keys while we’re late for an appointment, and doing a little happy dance when we find them right where we should’ve looked for them in the first place. But for Jesus in our gospel today they mean something a little more. But something no less relatable in our human experience. Come and listen to a story of a sheep and a coin that reveal some deeper truths about our lives.

Rally Sunday – The First Sunday in the Season of Creation

It’s Rally Sunday at Good Shepherd, and the first Sunday in the Season of Creation. And what a way to kick it off! Jesus pulls no punches today in describing the demands of discipleship. Which is maybe exactly what we need as his followers. After all, our theme this year for the Season is “Peace With Creation”. And peace doesn’t often come without some sacrifice. But neither does it come without some encouragement. Let’s explore!

If today’s worship service takes place outdoors, then there will be no livestream.

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

What does our faith life have to do with our work life? Maybe that’s a question that doesn’t occur to us often. Or at least as often as it should. Today, with the help of congregation member Kris Mathiasen we’ll reflect on that. And hear what Jesus teaches about the proper place of work in our lives of discipleship.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

This week our church has been buzzing with the energy of 20 or so youngsters hopping, bopping, and learning at our summer VBS. And this Sunday we worship jointly with our friends from St. Laurence Anglican Church who partner with us in that wonderful ministry. Reverend Philip from St. Laurence will be preaching for us and reflecting on one of the stories we learned during the week, that being Jesus and Zaccheus. What might a tale about Jesus travelling to the house of a despised sinner have to teach us about our life journeys?

Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Our readings today all speak to us of faith. And Abraham, who we hear about in two of our readings, is about as big a hero of faith as they come. But it’s Jesus who challenges us today with a different understanding of faith than that which we usually think of, or even prefer. And yet it just may be an understanding that can save the world!

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Be on guard against all kinds of greed,” Jesus exhorts us today. That’s a lesson we know well. But not one that we practice nearly as faithfully. For which there may be many reasons. But Jesus tells a parable that highlights one of those reasons that couldn’t be more true for us today. One we are so often oblivious too even in our exercise of compassion. Listen to a story of a farmer.

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Lord’s Prayer is easily the most familiar and often recited prayer among Christians. But is it more than just a prayer? True it makes an attractive poster, or a lovely bookmark. But in truth this prayer Jesus taught us has more to give us than just memorable words to pray when our own escape us. Today we listen a little closer to words we’ve heard many times, but maybe never given close attention.
