What is the root of gratitude? We often hear that it is counting our blessings. Which is a pretty good spiritual discipline actually. But biblically, that root lies even deeper. As we learn from a thankful outcast and misfit in our gospel this morning.

Authority has always been an issue. Who gets it? Where does it come from? When does it need to be challenged? And, as our gospel asks today, what is it for? As we reflect on our place in creation as humans, maybe that’s the most important question to ask.

We use a lot of attributes to describe God. Gracious, loving, powerful, merciful. Our gospel informs us today, however, that “fair” isn’t one of those words. At last as we humans judge fairness. So God isn’t fair. But that doesn’t mean God isn’t good. In fact, it may be exactly God’s unfairness that makes God good.

Forgiveness. An easy word to say. Not such an easy one to practice. As a slave in Jesus’s parable this morning discovers. But can this gruesome little tale be something of a key to helping us understand a faithful Christian response to the climate crisis? Today is the second Sunday in the Season of Creation. So we are worshipping in the glory of God’s creation [i.e. outdoors]. As a result, there will be no live stream today. But we invite you to pray with us for the healing of creation and the reconciliation of relationships among all living things.
If you’ll be joining us, please remember to bring lawn chairs for yourselves, and an extra, if you have one, for someone else! We will also set up a very limited number of chairs on the east landing for those with mobility issues to participate in the service. After worship we will enjoy a little fun and then head in for pie and ice cream. We hope you can join us for all or even just a part of the day as we kick off our fall schedule of activities.
Today we enter the Season of Creation. And being the Sunday of the Labour Day weekend we have a great opportunity to reflect on our vocation as stewards of creation. To hear Jesus describe it though, that vocation does not sound much like good news. Until we listen very carefully to what he actually says.
